Movement is critical to staying healthy. With many of us spending more time than ever in our home, we miss out on critical everyday movement that previously were a natural part of life. Here are 10 fun and creative ways to move around more at home that will brighten up your day and make you feel better – body and soul.

Moving has a long list of health benefits:

  • Enhanced Mood
  • Strengthening muscles
  • Stronger bones
  • Better mental health
  • Better sleep
  • More energy

I could go on, but I think you know, and feel, that when you are still for long periods at the time, you’re not feeling your best. And with many of us spending much more time at home, we tend to move less. Even if we take an hour for a walk or some other exercise, it’s not the same as moving regularly throughout the day.

Scheduling time for movement however, can feel like another chore in our busy lives. Instead, we should fine fun ways to move more. Things we actually enjoy. And we should make them part of our daily lives. Make them into habits. Let’s explore the best ways to move around more, that doesn’t even requires leaving home!

1. Play Games that Make You Move

Do you remember twister? A great way to move around with your family!

Do you have one of those game consoles where you are supposed to move around? Is it gathering dust somewhere? Get it out and get up – playing the games as they were meant to be played.

If you live on your own and want some company, set up a zoom with your friends and play charades!

2. Practice a New Skill

Learn something new that will make you move more at home. You can learn to juggle, start wood working, or practise grooming your pet. By practicing a new skill, you will feel better. As humans, we enjoys pursuing mastery. And by choosing a skill that keeps you moving you will move around more at home without thinking about it.

3. Move Around More at Home by Dancing

Dancing makes people happy. Rock out to your favourite tunes, play air guitar to a rock classic or practice salsa steps in the kitchen.

Dance shouldn’t be limited to going to the club or to when you win the lottery. Dance when you pot around at home. When you wait for the kettle to boil. When you water the plants.

You can dance on you own, have a dance out with the family. Dance battle on Zoom anyone??

4. Play with Your Kids or Pets

Getting on the floor to play is one of the best ways to move around! Play, chase them, and generally interact in their favourite way. You will get closer to your kids or pets and you will definitely be the best mummy or daddy ever!

If you let them choose their favourite game, I can promise you it will give you a proper workout. If you let it.

5. Take Classes Online

The internet is full of classes to learn yoga, kick boxing, Taekwondo, Tai Chi or even Krav Maga at home! Make a bit of space in front of the telly and learn to move in a new way. Martial arts improve your confidence as well as making you move – double win!

6. Bounce on a Trampoline

If you have kids, chances are you already have a trampoline in your garden. Get in there and bounce around!

If you don’t have a trampoline already, get a mini trampoline. Put it in front of your telly or by your desk if you work from home. Bouncing around will act as a great stress reducer as well as getting you moving more at home.

7. Fidget to Move Around More at Home

We are normally told not to fidget as it can be distracting to those around us. But you’re at home right?!? You can do whatever you want.

In addition to being fun to play around with something, fidgeting can both help boost our attention levels and help calm us down. (source)

For those concerned about weight management fidgeting can also be a great way to burn up to 800 extra kcal a day!

Find something to fidget with that you really enjoy. It can be a fidget spinner, a yoyo or some sort of clay or slime. Whatever sounds fun to you!

    8. Move Around More at Home: Singing

    Stand up and sing from the top of your lungs. Really engage your core and belt it out. Don’t think singing is moving? Try singing Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 and ask your abs if they agree!!

    Singing has a myriad of health benefits. It relieves stress, it may stimulate the immune system and it improves lung function. And it releases endorphins to make us feel great.

    Music brings us pleasure and releases our suffering. It can calm us down and pump us up. It helps us manage pain, run faster, sleep better and be more productive.

    9. Do a Challenge

    Love competing? Set up a challenge for yourself or join one online to have the support of a community. You can even do it for charity if you want an extra feel good boost!

    How many steps can you take in a day?

    How many push-ups can you do?

    Want something more fun? Get your friends together online and challenge each other to stand on one leg the longest or who can scream the loudest. (You might want to warn the neighbours beforehand though!)

    Or maybe do a baking challenge?

    10. Spend More Time on Activities You are Already Enjoying

    Do you love cooking or baking but you don’t do it as much as you wish? Love gardening or painting? When you prioritise your time, make sure you make time for the activities that gets you moving, and that you really enjoy doing.

    It’s worth the effort to get off the chair to make a tasty meal or loaf of bread.

    Love gardening but don’t have a garden? Grow plants for others to plant, or make yourself an indoor jungle!
